Kings College Chapel Roof

Kings College Chapel Roof

Earlier this year, the team at Altrad Generation's King's Lynn branch were tasked with a unique and demanding challenge: providing a temporary roof solution to facilitate the essential repairs to the renowned King's College Chapel at The University of Cambridge. The task involved the removal of the lead roof, replacement of the timbers beneath, and subsequently reinstalling the roof, all without the use of a crane due to on-site restrictions.

Project

To address this challenge, Altrad Generation employed a state-of-the-art temporary roof system incorporating 780mm beams and components from the Uni-Roof system. This innovative approach ensured the structural integrity necessary for the restoration project. The rest of the scaffold was assembled using Altrad Generation's traditional tube and fittings, combining modern and conventional techniques for an optimal solution.

A notable logistical challenge of this project was the absence of crane access on site. All essential materials, including the substantial components for the temporary roof, had to be meticulously transported to the roof using a lift integrated into the loading bay, located approximately 100 feet above ground level. This careful planning and execution guaranteed the project's efficient progression despite the logistical limitations.

Beyond the intricate repair work, the project underscored a commitment to sustainability by incorporating plans for the installation of solar panels on the newly restored roof. This forward-thinking addition aligns with broader objectives relating to energy efficiency and environmental responsibility.

The successful execution of this project not only met the immediate restoration requirements of King's College Chapel but also showcased Altrad Generation's ability to innovate and adapt to complex challenges. By utilising a combination of modern and traditional scaffolding techniques and navigating logistical obstacles, the King's Lynn branch contributed to the preservation of an iconic piece of architectural history.
